A man has received a sentence for igniting a fire at the guard shack of the FBI's Chicago office. Security footage recorded James Lofton pouring an accelerant on his jacket and setting it ablaze in November 2022, resulting in a significant fire. Firefighters from Chicago quickly extinguished the flames at the location on West Roosevelt Road using hand pumps. In February 2025, Lofton entered a guilty plea for the crime of depredation of government property.
Nearly three years later, a judge imposed a sentence of 22 months, taking into account the time already served. Following his incarceration, he will be under supervised release for three years. Additionally, Lofton has been ordered to pay $3,900 in restitution, with no injuries reported in connection to the case.
